Because of this, the Spectra S2 tends to be cheaper and what is available via insurance, since insurance typically provides the "minimum" to meet the requirement of a double electric pump. Also, inexplicably, Spectra refuses to make a battery pack for the S2. Their reasoning is... go buy an S1 if you need to occasionally pump away from a wall plug!
So what can you do when you're a pumping mom who can't always be next to a wall plug? I've found a solution!
This Medela battery pack... IS COMPATIBLE!
I noticed that my Spectra S2 has a marking for "12V DC" where the power adapter plugs in, and I noticed that the Medela battery pack that I have also has a "12V DC" marking on it, and the plug happens to fit the pump. I plugged it in and gave it a try and it works!
Give it a try and let me know how it works for you!

Hello! Thanks so much for this tip! I wanted to reach out to check that this is working for you before I go ahead and get the S2 through my insurance. Thank you! :) -Jane
ReplyDeleteIve been wondering this and I'm hopeful youre right. Will try tomorrow (12-28-17)
ReplyDeletethis was so helpful! thanks!
ReplyDeleteJulie have you tried this yet the only thing I could find online is 9 volt batteries for Medela
DeleteYou're welcome! :)
DeleteHow does suction and pumping compare to battery power vs wall power?
ReplyDeleteTheir solution sucks! Insurance wouldn't cover the S1, or I would have bought it!
ReplyDeleteDoes it really work? No damage to the s2 unit?
ReplyDeleteDo you have any idea where I can get a Medela 12v battery pack? Or if they're still made? Someone at the insurance company just gave me the exact same "inside tip" for the Spectra S2 (which I just ordered), but I can only find Medela 9v packs. Maybe they got wise to the hack?? Hmm...
ReplyDeleteMy Medela battery pack has 12V marked on it. I'm not an electronics expert, but I think this means it outputs up to 12V.
