Battery Pack for Spectra S2 Breastpump

The Spectra S1 and S2 breast pumps differ only by the fact that the Spectra S1 has a rechargeable battery pack, and the S2 does not (meaning it always has to be plugged in to a power source to work).
Because of this, the Spectra S2 tends to be cheaper and what is available via insurance, since insurance typically provides the "minimum" to meet the requirement of a double electric pump. Also, inexplicably, Spectra refuses to make a battery pack for the S2. Their reasoning is... go buy an S1 if you need to occasionally pump away from a wall plug!

So what can you do when you're a pumping mom who can't always be next to a wall plug? I've found a solution!

This Medela battery pack... IS COMPATIBLE!

I noticed that my Spectra S2 has a marking for "12V DC" where the power adapter plugs in, and I noticed that the Medela battery pack that I have also has a "12V DC" marking on it, and the plug happens to fit the pump. I plugged it in and gave it a try and it works!

Give it a try and let me know how it works for you!

  4. How does suction and pumping compare to battery power vs wall power?

  5. Their solution sucks! Insurance wouldn't cover the S1, or I would have bought it!

  7. Do you have any idea where I can get a Medela 12v battery pack? Or if they're still made? Someone at the insurance company just gave me the exact same "inside tip" for the Spectra S2 (which I just ordered), but I can only find Medela 9v packs. Maybe they got wise to the hack?? Hmm...

    1. My Medela battery pack has 12V marked on it. I'm not an electronics expert, but I think this means it outputs up to 12V.
